SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
Spiritual direction is all about growing in relationship with and experiencing God. It’s a relational process in which a trained spiritual guide listens to and companions someone who desires a deeper relationship with and experience of God. A Spiritual Director’s role is to help the directee to become aware of where God is working in their life, and to hear from and discern the work of the Spirit for themself. A director does this by listening with one ear towards the directee and the other ear towards God on behalf of the directee. The director asks questions, helps the directee to notice God’s grace in their life> A spiritual director will pray with you , give scriptural meditations, and guide the directee through spiritual exercises all with the aim of helping the directee to dwell with, and experience, God.
Spiritual Direction is different than psychotherapy which makes use of evidence-based treatments and theories to care for a client, pastoral counseling which applies God’s word to the client, or life coaching which directs the client to reach goals. Spiritual Direction will share some similarities and practices with these other disciplines like asking questions, giving empathy, and seeking healing, but its unique focus is in helping the directee to tangibly encounter God.
